Starting today, a broader range of individuals, including Blue Badge users, will now be eligible for the Disabled Persons Railcard. This extension in eligibility encompasses both visible and non-visible disabilities.

The Disabled Persons Railcard offers a 1/3 discount on rail tickets, resulting in an average yearly saving of £126. The cost for a one-year railcard is £20, while a three-year option is priced at £54. For additional money-saving tips on transportation, you can explore further resources.

Moreover, the discount also applies to one companion aged 16 or above traveling with the cardholder. The eligibility criteria have been expanded to include individuals with certain conditions. The upcoming expansion later this year will cover long-term medical conditions and forms of neurodiversity impacting a person’s ability to travel by train significantly.

Jacqueline Starr, Executive Chair and CEO at Rail Delivery Group, emphasized the importance of widening the railcard’s eligibility to enhance accessibility and confidence in rail travel. Rail Minister Lord Hendy highlighted the significance of this expansion in promoting inclusivity in transportation and ensuring affordable journeys for a wider demographic.

Further enhancements to the eligibility criteria are expected in September, focusing on specific medical conditions affecting travel ability. Detailed information on evidence requirements and application procedures will be released ahead of the forthcoming expansion.
