A Slovakian man who had been on the run from Italian authorities for 16 years was apprehended upon his return to attend the Winter Olympics to support his nation’s ice hockey team. Despite not being publicly identified, the 44-year-old was arrested by the police before even reaching the arena, as there had been an outstanding arrest warrant issued against him in 2010 for a string of shop thefts he allegedly committed.

The Carabinieri police managed to locate the fugitive when he checked into a guesthouse on the outskirts of Milan. Despite being wanted, he chose to return to Italy, where he was immediately detained and escorted to the central San Vittore Prison. Meanwhile, the Slovakian men’s ice hockey team achieved a surprising victory over Finland with a score of 4-1 in their Olympics opener.

In the midst of the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics, there have been notable incidents, including Team USA veteran Lindsey Vonn’s dramatic crash resulting in a leg injury while competing without an ACL. Also, Jutta Leerdam, Jake Paul’s fiancée, upgraded her silver medal from Beijing to gold in the 1000m speed skating event, causing emotional scenes in the stands with Paul in tears supporting her.

Despite Team GB’s near misses, there is optimism for success, particularly with skeleton world champion Matt Weston poised for a potential gold medal in the upcoming final event. The Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympic Games are ongoing from February 6 to February 22, with fans able to watch over 850 hours of live action on discovery+ via Prime Video, available through a £3.99 entertainment subscription providing access to TNT Sports 2 for continuous Olympic coverage.
