The globe is filled with incredible destinations waiting to be explored, and identifying the most breathtaking ones is a challenging task. Time Out has taken on this challenge and recently released a list of the 51 most beautiful places worldwide. This list includes lakes, beaches, National Parks, libraries, vineyards, and historic towns. Topping the list is a stunning mountain range that offers exceptional hiking opportunities, conveniently just a two-hour flight away from the UK.

The Picos de Europa in Spain is a magnificent limestone mountain range reaching heights of 2,650 meters, situated around 12 miles from the coastline. The mountains rise sharply, creating deep gorges to explore, according to reports by Express.

One of the most popular trails in Spain is the Cares Trail, which follows a canyon and passes through rugged peaks and cascading waterfalls. Spanning a total of 13 miles, this trail is challenging and not recommended for beginners, but its moderate inclines make it achievable for experienced hikers. For a more leisurely option, visitors can take the Fuente Dé cable car, providing quick access to the mountainside for a relaxed experience and panoramic views of the lush landscape below.

Upon reaching the summit, visitors can venture onto additional hiking trails, some of which offer demanding, steep climbs with breathtaking views. The mountains are part of the larger Picos de Europa National Park, which includes the picturesque Lakes of Covadonga. These serene blue waters are surrounded by peaks and greenery, resembling landscapes found in Scotland or the Lake District, creating a unique Spanish experience.

The national park is teeming with wildlife, including brown bears, wolves, vultures, and eagles, with chances to spot mountain goats and colorful butterflies amid the limestone terrain. Nearby towns like the medieval Potes offer a charming atmosphere with ancient stone and half-timbered buildings, cobbled streets, and historic sites like the Torre del Infantado, a 15th-century tower turned museum with a rooftop terrace providing panoramic views of the town.

Arenas de Cabrales, located on the park’s outskirts, is a popular place to stay known for its Cabrales cheese production and a variety of renowned restaurants serving Northern Spanish cuisine. Expect hearty and rustic dishes like bean stews and grilled meats made from locally sourced ingredients from the surrounding mountains.

The Picos de Europa is easily accessible, just under two hours from Santander Airport, with airlines like Ryanair offering services. Flights operate year-round from Edinburgh and London-Stansted, and seasonally from Birmingham and Manchester, with fares starting at £15 one-way and a travel time of 2 hours from the UK.
