Barry Hearn criticized Conor Benn’s departure from Matchroom Boxing to Zuffa Boxing as lacking in class, especially since Benn did not even engage with Eddie Hearn before making the switch. The 29-year-old officially announced the split and is now under the management of the Saudi-backed promoter led by UFC President Dana White.
Benn chose to part ways with the promoters who had supported him for a decade, including during a previous failed drug test. Despite Eddie Hearn’s praise after Benn’s victory over Chris Eubank Jnr, Benn opted to join Zuffa due to what he deemed an irresistible opportunity, disregarding any attempts by Eddie Hearn to discuss their partnership, which disappointed Hearn.
Barry Hearn expressed his disappointment in Benn’s actions, stating that despite the lucrative offer from Dana White, abandoning the team that had been instrumental in Benn’s career growth was uncouth and hurtful. Benn is now the second high-profile addition to Zuffa, following Jai Opetaia, and will no longer be guided by Eddie Hearn as anticipated post his win over Eubank Jnr.
Eddie Hearn proposed a meeting to discuss the situation with Benn, which Benn declined, suggesting legal involvement instead, a move that Barry Hearn found appalling after the years of support given to Benn. Benn, set to challenge for the WBC welterweight title, defended his decision by emphasizing the financial appeal of the offer presented to him.
Hearn Senior clarified that he would have respected Benn’s decision had it been handled differently, emphasizing the importance of mutual respect and professionalism in such circumstances.
