NASA is in a race with China to establish a new $20 billion moon base, aiming to achieve this goal through the Artemis II mission’s success. The upcoming Artemis III mission will involve astronauts practicing docking maneuvers with a lunar lander in Earth’s orbit.
Dr. Mathias Basner, a researcher at the University of Pennsylvania, has been studying space crews on the International Space Station since 2008, including the Kelly twins. He noted that the U.S. is engaged in a space race with China, albeit on a smaller scale than the historic race with the former Soviet Union in the 1960s.
NASA is set to announce the crew for the Artemis III mission soon, with the objective of reducing risks for future moon landings. The agency also revealed futuristic images of the planned moon base, building upon the accomplishments of Artemis II.
Plans for a mission to Mars were unveiled, highlighting the use of nuclear-powered spacecraft to reach the red planet. NASA’s strategic vision, outlined by chief Jared Isaacman in Washington DC, emphasizes the urgency of returning to the Moon, establishing a lunar base, and ensuring American leadership in space.
Amit Kshatriya, NASA’s associate administrator, shared details about sending a nuclear-powered spacecraft, Space Reactor-1 Freedom, to Mars as part of the agency’s expansion of the Artemis program. The race to develop lunar landers for future missions intensifies, with SpaceX and Blue Origin competing for the Artemis IV moon landing in 2028.
In addition to the Artemis program updates, NASA’s plans include standardizing rocket configurations, scheduling annual lunar landings, and expanding missions. The U.S. faces competition from China in establishing the first manned moon base, with a focus on the south polar region for its significant resources.
The Artemis II mission featured diverse crew members, including the first woman, person of color, and non-U.S. citizen to fly to the moon. NASA’s advancements in space exploration mark a significant departure from the Apollo era, showcasing progress and diversity in space missions.
