Keir Starmer has called for both parties to seek a resolution following the breakdown of US-Iran peace negotiations today.

During a morning telephone conversation, the Prime Minister and the Sultan of Oman agreed that the US, Israel, and Iran should avoid further escalation and emphasized the importance of maintaining the ceasefire.

A spokesperson from Downing Street stated that the Prime Minister spoke with His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik al Said of Oman. They discussed recent peace talks in Pakistan and stressed the need for both sides to find a way forward while emphasizing the continuation of the ceasefire to prevent any escalation.

The Sultan updated the Prime Minister on the situation in the Strait of Hormuz, and the Prime Minister expressed gratitude for Oman’s efforts in rescuing distressed sailors in the region. The Prime Minister also highlighted the UK’s commitment to Oman’s security and provided an update on collaboration with Ukraine in drone technology.

Acknowledging Ukraine’s crucial role in the region, the Prime Minister noted Russia’s support for Iran’s aggressive actions. Both leaders agreed to stay in touch.

The Prime Minister has been leading European initiatives to reopen the blocked Strait of Hormuz, a critical shipping passage for global oil transportation.

Efforts to reopen the Strait as part of the US-Iran ceasefire have encountered difficulties, leading to a spike in gas prices due to the ongoing closure.

Next week, Britain will host additional discussions with a coalition of nations to address the reopening of the vital shipping lane in the Strait of Hormuz, continuing efforts to ensure freedom of navigation.
