Travelers from the UK planning trips to popular European destinations like France, Spain, Portugal, and Greece will now encounter new entry regulations with the introduction of Europe’s Entry/Exit System (EES). The implementation of EES requires non-EU visitors, including British citizens, to undergo biometric data collection such as facial scans and fingerprinting upon entering the EU.

Furthermore, individuals will have their passport data recorded at EU borders, enabling the tracking of entry and exit dates to identify any overstays easily. The EES aims to eventually replace traditional passport stamps.

Despite the efficiency goals, adapting to the new technology has presented challenges at some airports, resulting in longer queues for British travelers during both arrival and departure from the EU. While EU passport holders have dedicated lanes, Brits must join other non-EU nationals in processing through the new system.

To potentially expedite the process for UK and other non-EU travelers, an official app is available, though many are unaware of its existence. The Travel to Europe app, accessible on Apple’s App Store and Google Play, promises to streamline border checks. Travelers must download the app, register, and it is currently operational at select border points like Sweden and Portugal, with plans for expansion.

Families traveling together can conveniently input co-traveler information on the app, consolidating details in one location. By entering trip specifics and scanning their passport via the app, passengers can take a selfie, answer questions, and complete the process up to 72 hours before departure.

Upon completion, the app generates a unique QR code for each passenger, which can be scanned at self-service kiosks or by border control personnel. Following signage or guidance from airport staff to the pre-registration queue is advised. Although entry is not guaranteed, this process enhancement could significantly expedite border clearance for many passengers.

Travelers are cautioned to anticipate potential disruptions in the upcoming months, particularly in popular vacation spots like Tenerife, due to reports of extended queues and confusion stemming from the new entry system. While the EES rollout avoided the busy Easter period, the looming May half-term could introduce additional pressure on the system.
