Keir Starmer has expressed concern over the volatile situation in the Middle East following Donald Trump’s initiation of a blockade on the Strait of Hormuz. Addressing the Commons, the Prime Minister emphasized the need for a composed yet resolute approach to the conflict in the region, acknowledging the fragile nature of the two-week US-Iran ceasefire.
During his recent visit to the Gulf region, Starmer engaged in talks regarding strategies to reopen the vital shipping lane of the Strait of Hormuz. The initial blockade by Iran disrupted the transportation of approximately one-fifth of the world’s oil and gas. However, Trump has now imposed his own blockade on the strait, warning of severe consequences for Iranian naval ships attempting to breach the US Navy’s restrictions.
Following the breakdown of US-Iran discussions, oil prices surged above $100 a barrel, fueled by escalating tensions in the region. Starmer highlighted the significant shifts in global dynamics, emphasizing the need for a poised yet robust response to the current state of affairs, which he described as more unstable and insecure than in previous times.
Starmer outlined key points from his address to MPs, stressing the importance of restoring freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz. He condemned Iran for exploiting the strait during the conflict and emphasized the necessity of unimpeded navigation for the global economy. Starmer affirmed the UK’s commitment to collaborating with other nations to develop a credible plan to reopen the strait, emphasizing the avoidance of joining Trump’s blockade.
In efforts to address the crisis in the Middle East, Starmer announced plans to host a summit with French President Emmanuel Macron, focusing on diplomatic resolutions and military support for safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz. He reiterated the importance of including Lebanon in the ceasefire agreement and condemned Israel’s strikes on the country. Starmer also defended the upcoming state visit of the King to the US, highlighting the significance of the relationship between the two nations.
In response to the Iran conflict, Starmer pledged to strengthen economic ties with European allies to mitigate the impacts of past upheavals such as Brexit. He emphasized the need for a new approach that reflects the evolving global landscape and highlighted the opportunities for enhanced security and cost-of-living benefits through closer collaboration.
Moreover, Starmer reiterated his commitment to achieving energy independence for Britain to alleviate the burden on consumers facing rising energy costs due to international events. Emphasizing the importance of moving away from fossil fuels, he underscored the necessity of seizing control over energy bills through accelerated efforts towards energy self-sufficiency.
