Canton, a familiar location for me, has secured a spot on Time Out’s compilation of the UK’s trendiest neighborhoods. Securing the third position, Canton falls just behind Camberwell and Digbeth. The only reason it didn’t clinch the top spot might be due to the undeniable desire of Londoners to dominate the rankings.
Described as a former pathway for football enthusiasts heading to nearby Cardiff City Stadium, Canton has now transformed into a vibrant community. A 30-minute walk from the city center leads to a range of charming shops and cafes. Chapter Arts Centre offers a mix of indie films, voguish events, and quality cocktails. Hard Lines Coffee and Ffloc present delectable lunch choices. Corp Market, once a pub, has evolved into a diverse market hosting unique traders. Notably, it houses Head Above The Waves, a skatewear boutique supporting mental health causes.
Formerly considered an unattractive suburb, Canton has seen a surge in property values as the middle class migrates in. The area now boasts a diverse culinary scene, with eateries like Burger Boyz, Workhorse, and Calabrisella becoming popular dining spots.
Despite the influx of modern establishments, Canton still retains its essence. The neighborhood, with its mix of old and new, remains a cherished locale for many. While changes have brought trendy cafes and innovative cuisines, Canton’s traditional charm and local character remain intact, making it a deserving inclusion on any list of cool neighborhoods.
