Violence erupted in Myanmar as 24 individuals lost their lives in clashes with the military regime following an attack where two bombs were dropped by a paraglider on a group of around 100 people gathered in Chaung U township to mark the conclusion of Buddhist Lent festivities.

Myanmar’s military junta took control in 2021, sparking a civil conflict that led to the loss of significant territories, now being reclaimed through intense airstrikes. The recent bombing incident targeted an area crucial to the conflict involving armed resistance groups, specifically the People’s Defence Force (PDF), formed post-coup to counter the military rule.

An eyewitness who suffered injuries in the attack described the swift assault, reporting that the bombs were dropped within a span of seven minutes, causing devastating casualties. The gruesome aftermath made it challenging to identify the victims, with locals recounting the horrific scenes of children being torn apart.

According to reports, the military regime utilized paramotors for the attack due to limitations in military aircraft, a concerning tactic condemned by Amnesty International as a grave threat to civilian safety in Myanmar.

The ruling authorities in Myanmar faced difficulties in acquiring military equipment due to severe international sanctions, although support from countries like China and Russia supplying advanced drones and technology has bolstered the regime’s military capabilities.

The candlelight vigil held as a peaceful demonstration against military actions, forced conscription, and the upcoming elections also called for the release of political detainees, including the deposed leader Aung San Suu Kyi, who was imprisoned following the coup.
