Snowfall persists in the UK today after wintry conditions caused chaos for motorists in the North East and Yorkshire. An amber weather warning is in effect in these regions, with up to 25cm of snow expected. Additional snow and ice warnings are in place for Scotland, Northern Ireland, Wales, southwest England, and eastern England.
The Met Office warns of rural communities potentially becoming isolated due to intense snowfall, leading to occasional blizzard conditions and a risk of lightning. Motorists are advised to exercise caution as driving conditions remain hazardous. Stopping distances on icy surfaces can increase significantly, necessitating reduced speed and increased following distance.
In Aberdeen, the A90 was closed in both directions due to snow, causing disruptions with multiple vehicles stranded. Police have advised avoiding the area, while several schools in the Highlands and Aberdeenshire have been forced to close.
Further wintry showers are expected in East Anglia, western Wales, and Cornwall, with ongoing snowfall in the North East likely to cause significant disruptions. Multiple yellow warnings for snow and ice are in effect across the country, with National Rail cautioning commuters about potential delays and cancellations due to speed restrictions.
Cold Arctic air continues to grip the UK, with temperatures dropping as low as -6C in Cumbria overnight. The Met Office predicts even colder temperatures ahead, with lows of -12C possible in snow-covered areas of Scotland on Friday. While temperatures are expected to rise to more typical levels over the weekend, wetter and windier conditions are anticipated, signaling an end to the exceptionally mild weather experienced earlier in November.
