An estimated 23 million car trips are projected to occur during the upcoming long weekend. With anticipated warm weather and the commencement of school half-term holidays in England and Wales, road traffic is expected to be significantly heavier than usual. Additionally, the final round of Premier League matches this weekend is set to contribute to the heightened congestion, prompting drivers to prepare in advance.
The AA motoring group predicts Friday to be the peak day with around 23.4 million journeys, followed by 22.8 million on Saturday, and 22.4 million on both Sunday and the bank holiday Monday. Most trips are forecasted to be local, with half of respondents in an AA survey planning daily journeys of up to 50 miles. Shopping ranks as the top purpose for travel, mentioned by 40% of drivers, followed closely by visits to family or friends at 39%. A significant 23% are planning trips to DIY stores or garden centers, while 22% anticipate work-related travel.
Separate research conducted by the RAC reveals that 28% of drivers are increasingly concerned about fuel costs. The average petrol price across the UK stands at 158.52p, the highest since December 2022, with diesel at 185.92p. This translates to £87 for a full tank of unleaded, £14 more than last year, and over £102 for diesel, which is £26 higher than the previous year.
Lee Morley, an expert patrol at the AA, emphasized the potential impact of a warm holiday weekend on travel plans, stating that favorable weather often leads to spontaneous trips. He advised drivers to expect popular routes to become congested quickly. He also highlighted the potential traffic surge on Sunday due to the final Premier League matches, cautioning about increased activity near stadiums, city centers, and major roads. Morley recommended checking traffic conditions before departure and conducting basic vehicle checks using the FLOWER acronym (Fuel, Lights, Oil, Water, Electrics, Rubber) to prevent breakdowns.
Given the ongoing pressure of fuel prices on household budgets, Morley suggested cost-saving measures such as comparing fuel prices, reducing unnecessary weight, maintaining proper tire pressure, and driving smoothly. He also recommended utilizing the AA App to locate cheaper fuel options while traveling to avoid excessive expenses.
